         US Flag displayed in Bitche, France      

This iconic photograph was taken after the town of Bitche, France, fell to the 100th Infantry Division, on March 16, 1945.  Reportedly the flag had been hidden by a French woman throughout the German occupation.  The flag is being waved by Captain Thomas Garahan, of Brooklyn, NY.
