This iconic photograph was taken after the town of Bitche, France, fell to the 100th Infantry Division, on March 16, 1945. Reportedly a French woman had made the flag and hidden it throughout the German occupation. The flag is being waved by Captain Thomas Garahan, of Brooklyn, NY.
