Krueger notes that he was one year ahead of Marshall at the Infantry-Cavalry School at Ft. Leavenworth. He had met Marshall several years earlier when both were serving in the Philippines. He notes that Marshall succeeded him as Head of War Plans in 1938. During the Louisiana Maneuvers in 1941, Krueger recommended Eisenhower to Marshall for his Chief of Staff position. He speculates that Pershing’s support was critical to Marshall’s appointment as Chief of Staff.
