Judge William H. Hastie

Office of Under Secretary of War

My dear Judge:

On my return from Africa I found your note of January 30th and I wanted you to know that I appreciate very much that you saw fit to write me as you did. It is a great satisfaction to me to know that you have felt that we have done our best to meet an exceedingly difficult problem.

I was not aware of your prospective withdrawal from the War Department nor of your reasons, but I hope that your influence will be continued to bring about a better understanding in our successive steps in the solution of this great problem.

Faithfully yours,

G.C. Marshall
