Mr. F. D. Patterson
President, Tuskegee Institute
Dear Mr. Patterson:
During our recent discussion it occurred to me that Tuskegee Institute could probably use some vocational or manual training equipment which is being provided by other agencies of the Federal Government.
An investigation of the possibilities reveals that there is one Works Progress Administration project for the purpose of training persons for manual occupations in industries engaged in production for nation defense, (No. 165-2-00-1), which might be employed to furnish Tuskegee with some of this equipment. However we are informed that action must be initiated by you by applying to the Works Progress Administration State Administrator for Alabama, Mr. W. G. Henderson, 326 First National Bank Building, Montgomery, Alabama, for the establishment of a unit of this project.
We are also informed by the United States Office of Education that your Institute may qualify for federal aid from that source by satisfying certain conditions of the federal law which involve making the facilities to be aided available to the State Board for Vocational Education for integration into their training programs.
It appears that complete details can be obtained only by your action, so it is suggested that you write the Advisory Commission to the Council of National Defense and the United States Office of Education referring to the project number indicated above and requesting advice as to how to obtain an operating unit and the necessary equipment pertaining thereto.
Trusting that our efforts to obtain some non-military assistance for Tuskegee Institute will be of benefit, I am
