My dear General Smith:

Dr. F. D. Patterson, President of Tuskegee Institute, has suggested to me the desirability of locating a recreational area for colored soldiers on the Tuskegee Institute grounds. He assures me that both the Institute and the citizens of the town would welcome an establishment of this kind, and I believe that his idea may be a good one.

I wish you would look into this proposal and let me know if you think it would be desirable as far as the colored soldiers of the Fourth Corps Area are concerned.

Faithfully yours,

G. C. Marshall
Chief of Staff
