CARE, or Cooperative For American Remittances to Europe, was formed November 2, 1945 and was the best known relief agency of this period. Churches and other private goodwill agencies organized voluntary relief for Europe in money, goods, and services. It facilitated personalized giving for both the giver and the recipient.

CARE had immense appeal, growing rapidly from contributions of $500,000 in 1945 to $26 million in 1948.

CARE later expanded worldwide and changed its name to reflect its mission.
