Xerox 3698 Tank Recovery System

Date: February 12, 1943

Subject: World War II

MEMORANDUM FOR GENERAL MCNAIR:

Today General Marshall received a letter from General Ward which in part stated as follows:

“Pieces of my Division have been used all over Africa and we are fast becoming veterans. The tank recovery system of the Armored Forces is not yet satisfactory. Possibly a medium tank chassis with a crane somewhat along the model of the carriage of the 105-mm howitzer may be the answer. At any rate the matter must be solved and that promptly. Tanks are too hard to move overseas to lose them lightly through mechanical failure and blowing the tracks on minefields.”

General Marshall directed that this information be passed on to you.
