Epley Letter – 1944 – Training Accident
The other crew had a terrible accident on the way down. About 30 miles off the mainland on the way down, No. 3 engine caught fire and all efforts to extinguish it failed, so the pilot fearing an explosion at any moment, told the crew to bail out. He was the last to leave and just as he was about to jump the burning engine dropped completely out of the wing, nacelle and all.
