August 08, 1917 – Fall Out
August 8, 1917
As the men saw this there was a cessation of hilarity and when the order was given to “fall out” the men simply stretched themselves on the ground and enjoyed the experience through which they had just passed.
The return through the town and to the ship was executed without a sound being heard, except the steady and rhythmic tromp, tromp, tromp of hundreds of feet. I shall not soon forget our first trip ashore.
