Introducing the Hein-Roll Lecture
David Hein and David L. Roll have funded the new Hein-Roll Lecture on Leadership and Character, which will be held every two years.
Hein, the Foundation’s senior fellow and a former trustee, has contributed essays on Marshall’s character and enduring relevance to our magazine and other publications. Roll, a Foundation trustee and author of George Marshall: Defender of the Republic, has shared his scholarship in Marshall and through the Marshall Legacy Series.
“They stepped up to fund a biennial program on leadership and character, subjects central to Marshall’s life and career. We want to explore what his example can teach military and civilian leaders today.”

Marshall and the Virtue of Duty
In a 1943 letter, Marshall credited his childhood rector, the Rev. John R. Wightman, with “a profound influence on my character and life.” In this excerpt from his book Teaching the Virtues, Hein traces that relationship back to St. Peter’s in Uniontown, Pennsylvania, and considers the habits of faith and service that shaped Marshall’s sense of duty.

George C. Marshall—Character Matters
When Roosevelt was choosing the commander for Operation Overlord, Marshall declined to press his own claim. Roll sets that decision beside a 1938 White House meeting at which Marshall challenged the president’s proposal to build 10,000 warplanes. The essay examines the candor and self-restraint Marshall brought to his dealings with Roosevelt.
